Leading UK universities launch new consortium for Africa
- Eight strategically placed UK universities have joined hands to form UK Universities Consortium for Africa (UKUC)
- Consortia to provide over 2,500 undergraduate courses and over 1,000 postgraduate courses, including PhDs
- World Students Advisor elected to manage the consortium
London:The UK Universities Consortium for Africa will officially be launched at the Wembley stadium in London on Monday October 5, 2015.The UKUC is a unique consortium of eight UK universities who have voluntarily joined forces to support the education of African students in the UK by offering substantial tuition fee bursaries and discounts to African sponsors.
The eight universities, namely: Teesside University, Middlesbrough; The University of Bradford; University of Central Lancashire; University Campus Suffolk; University of the West of England, Bristol; Bath Spa University; London Metropolitan University and University College Business Football in Wembley, London, are strategically located around England to offer students a comprehensivevariety of locations.The consortium has a wide range of expertise and will offerover 2,500 undergraduate courses and over 1,000 postgraduate courses including PhDs. The courses cover a diverse array of subjects including creative arts and education, animation, engineering, business, medicine and law.
The universities believe that through this consortium, students from Africawill gain an exceptional international experienceand also benefit the universities by encouraging cultural diversity. In order to achieve this, the universities will:
- Offer up to 20 per cent reduction in tuition fees for sponsors who send students to study in the UK;
- Explore Trans-national Education (TNE) to deliver UKUC curriculum in Africa;
- Seek Knowledge Transfer Partners (KTP), and work with African universities in Africa with the aim of stimulating economic development and creating jobs;
- Seek joint research staff and student exchange opportunities
The consortium will be managed by WorldStudent Advisors (WSA), an educational consultancy specialized in placing African students in UK universities. Since its inception in 2013, the WSA has recruited over 20 young African students, aged between 7 and 17 years, to attend soccer camps with Manchester United Soccer Schools in the UK and has also sent three athletes to Hartpury College, a further education college and associate faculty of the University of the West of England.

The launch event will be attended by the participating universities as well as representatives of several African embassies and high commissions in London.
