The Lagos State Scholarship Board traces its origins to a resolution by the Lagos State Executive Council in October 1968. Initially, the board operated out of a rented apartment at No 75 Brickfield Road, Ebute-Metta. In 1992, it transitioned to a government building in Maryland. Sokoto State Scholarship Board

The Sokoto State Government has invested N14 billion in training 46,000 indigenous students in Medical, Engineering, and various professional fields from 2015 to 2022. Bello Isa, the Permanent Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, disclosed this when presenting State-sponsored students who graduated from India, Sudan, and Ghana to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

The funds were allocated for tuition, registration fees, and stipends. Of the 46,000 students, 1,121 were trained in Medicine, Engineering, and Paramedical courses, 15,000 graduated in other Science and Social Science-related fields from Nigerian universities, and 300 became Lawyers. Presently, 30,000 students are currently sponsored for various classes within the country.

Given ongoing hospital expansions, Governor Tambuwal highlighted the significance of investing in medical students to address the State's Healthcare Professionals shortage. He also directed immediate employment for medical graduates after their mandatory NYSC service.
